EMMA

Age: 3
Adoption Fees: $400
Adoption Status:

March 5, 2020 – Emma & Ariana are gone to their forever home together.

February 25, 2020 – Emma and Ariana are wonderful roommates.  They’ve adapted to the household schedule and understand that barking is not allowed inside.  A semi-detached home would be suitable as long as they have a backyard.  Both girls have lots of pent up zoomies to release. They learn very quickly, we’ve been working on manners this week.  Thankfully they love their liver treats and are very food motivated as most Pugs are.  Emma is more reserved, Ariana is very enthusiastic about almost everything except meeting other dogs while on her leash.  They are by my side wherever I go, but will entertain themselves or lie down and cuddle together when I’m occupied.  Both girls have been sleeping in the big bed all night and they wait to be lifted down every morning.  Ariana snores and Emma likes to sleep under the covers.  These sweethearts will melt your heart and keep you smiling.

February 20, 2020 – Ariana and Emma are enjoying their walks and get very excited when I put on their harnesses.  They understand ‘walk’, ‘no’ and ‘bed’.  They would love a backyard and young humans to play with.  Never a dull moment with these two, they are as entertaining as they are adorable. Emma is so sweet and lovable, her tail is always wagging.  She loves her walks with her Sister.  When they’re not playing they are snuggling on the couch or in their bed. Both girls would do best with someone who is home most of the time, as they adore people and love to receive pets and praise.

February 17, 2020 – Ariana & Emma have settled in over the past two weeks. They’ve progressed from being very noisy and excited when we leave the house to calm and quiet. At least until we get home and they become very animated, bouncing and chirping around to greet us! Both girls are energetic and need active play. They particularly enjoy a good game of tug-of-war or tag in the backyard. Both Ariana & Emma love to interact with each other and other dogs and children—Emma takes the lead and instigates play with Ariana standing back to assess the situation before joining the fun.  Ariana & Emma are crate trained. While they prefer to be on the human bed to snuggle at night, they are comfortable in their crate for the night so long as they are together. They cuddle one another throughout the night and aren’t out of each other’s sight much during the day. They also love to be your shadow.

Emma is fully house trained and will use a pee pad if she can’t get outside. Ariana is making progress but continues to have some accidents inside. Getting these girls outside multiple times a day avoids any accidents and both are eager to get back inside to be rewarded with a liver treat. Ariana & Emma will soon be looking for a forever home with an active family who can keep up with their high-energy levels!

February 4, 2020 – Emma and Ariana had a good week. Ariana is really good at letting me do her ear drops. We got lots of walks in and currently working on teaching them to walk side by side.  Ariana had a tough week with house training, we are working on this.. This weekend she’s done well but had been out quite a bit in the yard. Neither like to do their business on walks.  Did a trial separation this weekend for a few hours at a time.  Neither liked to be left alone. The one that got to be with me in the back of the house in the sunroom did settle down and slept. Ariana had more difficultly being without Emma. When I leave the house to go out, they settle quite quickly and are excited when I return. Conclusion- both don’t like to be without a person.

January 28, 2020 – Emma has been enjoying a fenced in backyard with her pug sister Ariana – they were in heaven especially when the boys next door came to the fence to pet them. These two girls love children and love to play. Inside, Emma & Ariana were very curious and sniffed around the house.
I let them out every couple of hours and we even got two nice long walks in. They played with their toys and chased each other around. Adriana likes clean Emma. They are never far apart and always sleep next to each other. No accidents all day. Still haven’t eaten but are drinking well. First night was a bit rough as it took them a while to settle down. They don’t like you out of sight. Both go in and out easily. Today while I was at work, no accidents again and we’re happy when I got home to take them for a walk. Emma is a bit skittish and she is the vocal one, barks a bit when she hears a noise but stops when you tell her no. Emma is going to the vet this afternoon for a complete check up, to be brought up to date in her vaccination and to get microchipped.

January 25, 2020 – Emma & Ariana were surrendered by her owner who didn’t have time for them.  Emma is 3 years old and she is spayed.  She is a little bit overweight so we will be working on a reduced food intake and regular walks. Emma is going to the vet this afternoon for a complete check up, to be brought up to date in her vaccination and to get microchipped.

TEDDY

Age: 11
Adoption Fees: $300
Adoption Status:

February 17, 2020 – Teddy had 26 teeth removed at the vet last week and he was diagnosed with mast cell tumor on his front left foot.  We won’t have him neutered as we don’t want to put him under another anesthesia.  There is no surgery possible for this mast cell tumor other than partial amputation of the leg.  Teddy’s foster family has decided that they wanted to keep him forever and we were very happy with that outcome.  Teddy is now in his forever home….(:

February 12, 2020 – Teddy has had an eventful week. He continues to be sweet as can be, can be timid at first with new people until he smells them and receives a scratch, then he’s friendly as ever. He had the chance to play with a few young children, and did wonderful. He chased them around, and gave and receive kisses and lots of petting from little hands. He always loves his meal time, and lets you know when he thinks it’s time to be fed. He did great at the Winter Paw Thaw on February 9, socializing well with all the other dogs. He had 26 teeth removed during his dental procedure yesterday, and seems to be recovering well tonight. His appetite was definitely normal when he got home, and he was not impressed that his meal was smaller than usual due to taking it easy post surgery. He continues to do well with free range around the main living area, and has had no accidents in the house. He will go near the door at times to signal he would like to go outside. Always loves to be near you, and enjoys all the love and cuddles he is given.  Teddy has a mast cell tumor on his left front foot and the vet recommended to not touch it.  It doesn’t bother him.

February 4, 2020 – Teddy continues to enjoy several walks a day. He would enjoy a backyard at his forever home. We continue with basic training and has mastered “sit” & “down”. Looking forward to meet some fellow pugs at upcoming Winter PawThaw this coming Sunday at Ron Kolbus Lakeside Centre.

January 28, 2020 – Teddy has been enjoying the warmer temps and with his Pawz boots, he is getting extended walks in. His dental surgery was delayed to February 11.  Teddy is not much for toys at moment but like a typical pug enjoys his sleep or nap times. We have started treating his facial scar with Vitamin E oil and he does not appear to have any more skin issues. He is eating one protein dog food supplemented with pumpkin.

January 21, 2020 – Teddy is enjoying a warm home and shorter outdoor walks with this cold spell but we have found out tonight that he loves his new balloon Pawz boots. Along with his harness and a sweater, the salt did not bother him tonight. We have added both hemp seed oil and Tri Acta to his evening meal of wet kibble with some pumpkin and he loves his food like a typical pug. His skin is clearing up nicely and he looks forward to his dental procedure on February 11.

January 14, 2020 – We have had a good weekend. Teddy had a nice warm bath and had some playtime with a 4 month old puppy. He does play well with others. I have tried toys but not the greatest luck. He played very briefly with a ball. But could be related to not a big chewer due dental issues. I have got him a smaller ball rather than tennis size. He as mentioned is excellent on leash and not a puller but walks very fast.  He enjoys “smelling everything” and we kept walks to about 4 a day at 15-20 minutes each time. Minimal stratching and hopefully his neck will dry out, but so much better.

January 10, 2020 – We have renamed this sweet boy Teddy, we wanted him to have a new beginning and really, he totally looks like a big teddy bear.

January 7, 2020 – Zorro aka Teddy was at the vet last night.  He has skin infection and his mouth is terrible.  He has an ear & eye infection and an open wound on the left cheek caused by excessive scratching….he went back to his foster mom with antibiotics for skin and teeth, antibiotics for his eyes, 2 types of ear medication and a medication to help reduce the itch.  He also has a lump on his left foot that will be removed when he gets neutered.  He is going back to the vet in 3 weeks for a recheck.  Despite all those ailments, Zorro is such a good boy and has a beautiful disposition.  He is great in the car.

January 6, 2020 – Zorro was dropped at a shelter with his name written on a paper.  He is about 11 years old and he is not neutered.  He has been neglected for a long time based on his skin, ears and eye condition.  He is seeing the veterinarian tonite.  Stay tuned for more on this beautiful boy.

BILLY

Age: 5
Adoption Fees: $400
Adoption Status:

March 4, 2020 – Our lovable Billy is doing great after his dental procedure on Monday. He needed to have many extractions so he will be feeling much better with this behind him.
Billy is quite the cuddler and loves to snuggle next to his human. Billy doesn’t pay a whole lot of attention to the other animals, unless it’s to steal away a toy. He much prefers to receive lots of attention from people; he is the perfect companion .
He loves his belly rubs, and a little attention to keep his chin area dry as he can sometimes be a bit of a drooler.  Billy is a calm good boy, but gets very excited for his dinner and walk time.  He can make the strangest chirping noises when he’s excited !
He goes potty early in the morning and usually around dinner time. Billy doesn’t mark like most male dogs. Billy is now out of his cone from his neutering surgery and, once he’s all healed from his dental procedure, he will be back to his playful self. Billy does have hearing loss but that doesn’t stop him; he will always come when I bend down and clap my hands together. At dinner time when he’s being animated, he will quiet down when I show him the palm of my hand.
Billy is a sweet boy who loves and deserves lots of attention which he gives back one hundredfold! He just loves his people and will always be by your side.

March 3, 2020 – Billy had his teeth cleaned yesterday and only has 5 left in his mouth.  He is back to his foster home for a smooth recovery.  He had a light dinner last night and is resting with the resident pugs.  Billy’s urine analysis is clear, no more crystals, all good.  The fact that he is now neutered most certainly helps.

February 24, 2020 – Two weeks post surgery for Billy. His neutering has healed perfectly. But much to his chagrin, I still keep his cone on until his face is completely healed. Billy is doing great with his house training. He loves to do his spins around and around to find the perfect spot.  He continues to be a good boy on a walk and is such a good boy all around. Billy just wants to be loved and will follow you and sit quietly until he can get his attention.
He will have his playful moments with his toys and will do a little playing in the yard with the resident pugs but generally, he’s pretty laid back until…. dinner time and than he’s a chirping barking excited pug !!! He likes to hog the spot closest to his human at bedtime, or snuggled on the couch.  Billy’s dental procedure is scheduled for March 2.

February 18, 2020 – Billy continues to recover nicely from his neutering a week ago. His incision looks perfectly healed.  He is doing his business outside, no accidents in the house. His is back to being more energetic and playing with his toys, stealing toys from the resident pugs and reluctant to share. With the warmer weather, he has really enjoyed getting out for a walk. Billy is a calm pug but can be quite animated.
He will be very happy when that cone comes off.
He will be going for his Dental March 2nd, when he is completely healed. Billy loves attention and can’t get enough of cuddling and belly rubs. He is such a lovable boy.

February 17, 2020 – Billy is recovering nicely from his neutering surgery yesterday. He had a peaceful Long sleep last night full of snores and cuddles . He ate well today , and did his business outside finally later this afternoon. His incision looks good and also his face where he has a couple stitches from his skin tag removal. He Is being a good boy and staying relaxed and just chilling on the couch as everything starts to heal.  Billy is getting his teeth cleaned on March 2.

February 12, 2020 – Billy was neutered yesterday and he went back to his foster home at night.  He had 2 skin tags removed at the same time.  He is wearing a cone and he is not impressed by that.  Billy is going back to the vet in about 3 weeks to get his teeth cleaned.  He is the sweetest and most loyal boy always following his people.

February 4, 2020 – Billy is a big lovable teddy bear . He has settled in very well and gets along with the resident pugs. If he gets a toy, he doesn’t like to share but gives his warning with a wagging tail. He has occasionally chased the resident cat, but in cahoots with one of the resident Pugs .
Billy does have loss of hearing, confirmed by his visit to the vet this week and, was also treated for an ear infection.  He is now housetrained, no accidents in the house this week. He does his business outside when we get up in the morning, and again around late afternoon. He is a little slow to do his business, and I always go outside with him, he eventually gets around to it. Patience and positive reinforcement has really worked well. Billy is a quiet, well behaved pug, but can be quite vocal and excited when I come home. He also gets quite excited if he sees the leash and harness and knows a walk is in the plans. Billy walks great on the leash, doesn’t pull, so walking Billy is very enjoyable for both of us.
He is getting along great with the resident pugs, but does prefer  the company of a human being.
Loves to be as close to me as possible, on the couch, cuddled in bed & bathroom.
If I’m in the kitchen, or doing anything, he sits quietly watching until I’m finished and can give him a pet .
He just wants to be loved and given attention, but sometimes, can be a bit pushy and will on occasion try to push one of the resident pug away from me if they’re too close. This hasn’t been a huge problem , we are working on it, and he does it without aggression

January 28, 2020 – Billy has hearing loss and doesn’t like when we touch his ears although they look pretty good.  If we bend down and clap our hands together, he will come to you.
Billy can get vocal sometimes and try to scratch at us to get petted. We’ve been showing him a flat palm to get him to understand off .
The resident pugs are a little timid, totally backs off where Billy is … Billy has been a little too pushy for some attention.  He is a good boy on the leash and does not pull. He is not much interested in his surroundings just walking. In the yard, he is also not much interested, mostly stands and watches me. Doesn’t interact with the resident pugs or run around.  This sweet boy is pretty well behaved , wants a lot of attention.  W shall see how he makes out as he gets more settled, maybe in his forever home, he could be the main squeeze!  Billy is getting neutered on February 11.

January 21, 2020 – Billy has come out of his shell and is a very well tempered pug who enjoys visits when you have friends over. He’s not a jumper , greets them and likes the attention. Billy loves to cuddle on the couch and while you’re watching a movie. He also likes to chase you and fetch his moose during play time.
Billy can  get quite vocal. He’s good eater and likes to talk to you as you get his food ready which can get a bit loud. He’s not bad at settling down but is pretty excited even when you come home from work. He’s a very cute little guy who means well. He’s just starting to get the command “sit” and we’ll continue to work on it.  We are also working on Billy’s housetraining.  He was used to go on pee pads and we are working on making him understand the concept of doing his business outside.  Billy is getting neutered and will have his teeth cleaned on February 11.

January 16, 2020 – Billy has settled in nicely. He’s an energetic little guy and loves to play with his toys. He especially loves to play fetch with his moose toy or have you run holding it while he chases you.  Billy did very well greeting the children next door and certainly soaked in the attention. Billy is not shy when it comes to children or strangers. When out walking he doesn’t chase cars or people. He’s very well behaved. He is quite excitable when you bring out the leash and starts to chirp to try to let you know he’s happy. He does the same sometimes when you cuddle on the couch to watch a movie but settled quite quickly. He’s a good eater and rarely misses his pee pad. I’ve had some success with him doing his business outdoors but you have to watch him start to circle and then put him out, he will usually go. Billy’s finished his antibiotics and there is no sign of blood or discomfort.  He is getting his teeth cleaned on January 21.

January 6, 2020 –  Billy has a Urinary Tract Infection. He has been put on antibiotics for 10 days. The vet mentioned that he has an enlarged prostate and that might be the cause of the crystals in his urine.  Once he gets neutered, that might solve this problem. He’s pee pad trained and will go outside if you notice him spinning which he’s done on several occasions. I don’t think it’ll take too much to train him with a bit of effort. Billy is very good at taking his antibiotics in the Urinary SO wet food. Billy is a very playful 6 year old pug and instantly took to the green rope toy and Mr. Moose.  He took a bit to settle down for his first night but eventually went into the open kennel and slept there all night. First thing in the morning, he was very excitable and chirps to show he’s happy to see you.  He also loves to cuddle in the couch. Billy is very easy to love.

January 4, 2020 – Billy was surrendered to UMWPR this afternoon.  He is a 6 year old boy and he is not neutered.  Billy is going to the groomer this afternoon for a nice warm bath and brush.  Billy is going to the vet this afternoon as he has blood in his urine.  Stay tuned for more on this beautiful boy.

JADA

Age: 6 1/2 years old
Adoption Fees: $400
Adoption Status:

August 24, 2020 – Jada is gone to her forever home today.

July 22, 2020 – Jada has a solid routine down, so no issues with house training and is always happy at mealtime. With the hot weather, we haven’t been as active outdoors. When inside, she is generally pretty lazy. She does get up to mischief on the rare occasion and was on the lookout for snacks the other day (She found a potato and managed to nibble 1/3-1/2 of it before we took it away. Luckily there were no ill effects).  She continues to be an even tempered, patient girl who is looking forward to finding her forever home. Her weight seems to be holding at about 31 lbs.

July 9, 2020 – Jada is weighing in at about 31 lb. She is looking very good these days. She continues to love lounging in the sun, having zoomies in the yard, and going for walks.  She would take herself out on an adventure if the backyard was not secure/she wasn’t supervised.

She recently met a cat and was definitely interested in the chase, so has a bit of prey drive.  She may be best in a no cats.
Jada has been out on a few longer car rides with us and is great in the car. She is very adaptable – lazy in the house, but ready for adventures too.
June 8, 2020 – Jada is enjoying to cooler days.  This sweet girl enjoy going for walks and meeting new people.  Jada will shortly be available for adoption.  Jada is a raw food diet and she is doing very well on it.  We will be looking for adopters who will be ready to maintain Jada’s weight and be strict in her food intake.
May 25, 2020 – Miss Jada is down to 31.25 lbs now, that is about 7lbs lighter than when she came in almost 5 months ago.  She is really enjoying the warmer weather. She loves snoozing in the sun and having zoomies in the backyard (followed by cuddles on the couch). Her main goal is still to be with her people and to be as cozy as possible 🙂

April 27, 2020 – Jada is a great mix of lazy cuddle bug and active. She loves being near her people and cuddling on the couch.  She is always on the lookout for cozy spot to relax!  She will perk up and do a little dance when the harness and leash come out though.  She enjoys going for walks around the neighbourhood.  She is friendly with strangers and other dogs.  She may bark when she sees a dog, but with no ill intent. Her recall is decent, but she might take off if there was something exciting that caught her attention. She is very well behaved in the car.  She is currently living with two seniors dogs who are quite low key. She gets along well with them and has never been dominant. She is generally sweet and quiet natured. She enjoys playing with toys.  She will play with stuffies and chew on a nylabone.
Jada has been on a weight loss journey and has been doing great.  She is down to 32lb and we have moved from a large to a medium harness. She has a good appetite and will eat her food fairly quickly, but does not inhale her food.  We have started adding pumpkin which slows her eating and helps her digestion. She is 100% housetrained.
At night she will sleep on a blanket/bed beside our bed or crash on the couch downstairs.  She would LOVE to sleep in our bed, but we decided there was not enough room (much to her disappointment).
She is good when left alone at home for a few hours – she will mainly just sleep.  If there are kleenex and other goodies in the garbage, she might help herself to a snack.  We learned this when we left the bathroom open one day. But if doors are shut or it is out of reach, there is no problem.  The following are good to know for potential adopters:

She can snore loudly sometimes!!
When she is in a new environment, Jada can be sensitive to sounds and is more prone to barking.  With a bit of time to settle, this reduces significantly.  She does occasionally still bark a time or two at people/dogs going by our front window or if she hears other dogs when out in the yard.  She does not bark continuously, and responds to verbal redirection.

April 7, 2020 – Jada continues to do well on her weight loss journey. She is now 32.5 lb and her harness is getting loose!  She is loving the nicer weather. She loves lying in the sun in our backyard and going for walks. She wasn’t such a huge fan of getting her nails trimmed.  She definitely has that pug part of her that would love to avoid the nail cutters! She continues to be a calm, cuddly and loving guest that is endlessly patient with our toddler.  She does bark at times out the window or in the backyard, but is easily redirected and is not incessant with it.

March 17, 2020 – We were very lucky to have had the chance to foster Jada for the week. What a nice calm, and cuddly dog. She did have one accident the day she arrived but we were expecting that as it was a new house with new smells. Jada really enjoyed hanging around with the other pugs and following them around inside and outside.  She loves her walks and walks very well on the leash. She adjusted well to our routine for example, eating times and potty breaks. The second she see her harness and leash her little tail is wagging with excitement.

Jada loved searching in the toy box for the toy that would suit her she loves chews and also stuffies.  When we went out of the house for few hours, we left her loose and she was very well behaved, She was great around the baby, but she did however try to chase the cat and would bark at him if he was in sight. Jada listens well and is very well behaved, She caught on quickly to our house rules. She does like to let the squirrels outside know that she watching by giving them a bark.

March 3, 2020 – Jada continues to fit right in here. She is such an easygoing and friendly girl. We continue to work on her weight loss journey. She is looking forward to nicer weather for longer walks. She is such a cuddle bug and has been a great companion while I was feeling under the weather. Overall, she has been the easiest foster we’ve ever had and will be an amazing addition in her forever home.  P.S. she is so good, it is hard to know what to write sometimes.

February 17, 2020 – Jada is such a loving girl that has fit in so well in her foster home.  Last weekend she had a blast cuddling with everyone at the Winter Paw thaw. Cuddling is her favourite thing to do! We have found that  she is not possessive with food or toys.  She has been loving her raw food. We continue to have no issues with housetraining.   Overall she is a joy to have around.

February 4, 2020 – Jada needs to lose some weight, so we are monitoring her food and making sure she gets more exercise. She has been put on raw food. Jada is a lucky girl and had a beautiful sweater made just for her. She looks stunning in her foam green sweater. She is currently showing off!

January 28, 2020 – Jada had her teeth cleaned today.  She had 6 teeth missing and got 10 extracted.  Jada is 36.5lbs but her ideal weight should be around 28lbs.  We are feeding her 1/2 cup twice with NO treats.  Her forever home will have to continue working on Jada’s weight loss to ensure she reach a healthy weight which will be great for her joints/articulation and her general health.

January 23, 2020 – Jada is quite crafty at finding ways to get out of her sweater, and she will occasionally bark on walks (hearing children or another dog in the distance).  She likes frolicking in the snow! I would not want her to be off leash, as she would be an adventure/explorer.

January 21, 2020 – Jada has been doing well.  We have been taking it easy with some of the cold weather – Jada loves her people/cuddle time. She also has a favorite Nylabone.  She has some deeper folds on her face that require regular care, but otherwise is a low maintenance dog.  She will have her teeth cleaned January 28.

January 10, 2020 – Jada is settling in well. She is practically perfect in every way! She loves to cuddle, play with toys, go for short walks, and has such a happy personality.  Her only minor habit is occasionally barking at things out the window. She went to the vet today to get a check up.  Jada was definitely a bit anxious in the waiting room, but was very good for the vet.  She weighs 36.7lbs currently and the vet would like her to lose some weight.  She will also likely need a couple teeth removed, but is otherwise healthy.

January 6, 2020 – Jada arrived 2 days ago and right away you could tell she has the sweetest personality! She took the busy day in stride even though it had to be stressful.  After being picked up, she stopped at Completely Mutts for some a nice bath/grooming.
Since arriving, Jada has been doing her business outside and will give a bark to let you know she needs to go out. She pulls mildly on the leash outside, but is very good and keen to explore. She was also good in the car.  She liked zipping around the yard, but would look for an escape route if the fencing is not secure.  She has been good with the resident dogs and an absolute ANGEL with my toddler.  She clearly loves to be with people and enjoys cuddling on the couch.  She would prefer people who are home most of the time.  Jada is going to the vet this Thursday for a complete check up.

January 4, 2020 – Jada was surrendered to UMWPR this afternoon.  Jada is a pug/french bulldog and she is about 38lbs.  She will be going to the vet this week for a complete check up.  Stay tuned for more on Jada as we get to know her better.

MERKLEY

Age: 3
Adoption Fees: $500
Adoption Status:

December 18, 2019 – Merkley has been adopted by his foster mom, he is now living a happy with a pug sister and a boston sister.

December 16, 2019 – Merkley is so happy to be out of his cone collar.  Merkley is so gentle when he plays and loves to play fetch.  He is not interested with playing tug of war with the other dogs, wants to play fetch and tug of war with just me.
He is my shadow and my cuddle buddy.
He comes when he’s called; he is such a good boy, his accidents in the house are far and few between now.  Merkley’s nose fold looks much better after using the medicated wipes.  Merkley is a gem, he’s a pretty laid back boy, except on a walk; he likes to pull …He likes to play but he also likes his cuddle, calm time.

December 9, 2019 – Merkley is doing good, 4 days post surgery. The biggest problem is getting him to stay quiet. Stuck to his foster mom constantly and is not just content to be on her lap or next to her, he has to be in her arms like a baby or around her neck He is the most loving pug.
He’s marked a few times since surgery and that will get better with time.
Merkley has settled in so well, he likes the resident pugs but is more attached to his foster mom and has to keep an eye on her always to see what she’s doing so he can follow.
Merkley is just the loveliest little guy and so darn cute !!

December 5, 2019 – Merkley was neutered today and the surgery went very well.  He is now back to his foster family for a smooth recovery.

December 3, 2019 – What to say about Merkley ! Oh my goodness , if ever there was a perfect Pug , he is the poster boy ! Not only is he stunning to look at , he is such a good boy ! He comes when called, does his business outside. He keeps his belly band in the house which I’m sure won’t be necessary after his surgery on Thursday. He loves to play with his toys , especially his Kong. We will play fetch, he brings it back every time ….  He loves to play , loves to run around the yard at high speed, followed by the resident pug who is quick but not as fast as Merkley. Even in the yard if I call him, he comes running !
We had so much fun in the snow last night, as I shovelled, the resident pug and Merkley raced around and around … What a breath of fresh air to watch them !
He is a bit of a puller on a walk and you need a good grip on his leash !  If I move an inch, Merkley is right there. From a sound sleep, he knows if I am moving and is right behind me in seconds.  In bed, he will cuddle as close as he can get, will tuck his head under my chin if he can.
He is great with the resident dogs and they will all pile up together, reposition, and never any aggression.
He is not a real fast eater, so I give him his food in a different area.
Such a healthy, happy, loving, smart boy.  He will come up to me lean into my arms and just cuddle like a baby.  Merkley is getting neutered on December 5.

November 29, 2019 – Merkley went to the vet last night and was brought up to date in his vaccination.
He was very thirsty when he got to his foster home,  he loves the yard and peed on everything he could. Didn’t eat a whole lot of dinner which is understandable … was a bit restless through the night; we got up a few times and he went out to pee. For sleeping he stuck to me like glue, he is just a love bug.  Merkley is still inspecting his environment , likes the resident dogs and so far, has ignored the cat. What a stunning boy he is and very active, loves t to race in the backyard. Trying to put a belly band on him is like dressing a snake.

November 28, 2019 – Merkley came to us yesterday.  Surrendered by his owner who didn’t have time for him.  Merkley is born on November 8, 2016 so he just turned 3.  He went to the vet last night for a complete check up and te be brought up to date in his vaccination.  Merkley is getting neutered on December 5.  Stay tuned for more on this very active little marker.

OLIVE

Age: 9 1/2 years old
Adoption Fees: $300
Adoption Status:

December 20, 2019 – Olive went to her forever home today, she will be living with a sweet Golden Retriever and a work from home mom & dad.

December 12, 2019 – Sweet little Olive continues to do well.  Her confidence is growing and there are no signs now of separation anxiety.  As a matter of fact, when she knows I am leaving and she is not coming, she just climbs into one of the dog beds with her foster brothers.  Today, she didn’t even come to the door when I left.  When I return home, her little bum wags but she is no longer super excited.   Around the house, she has also started to give me space only following on my heels about 80% of the time now.  Each morning after our walk, she and Peanut, the resident pug, play a little.  She still gets over excited but she comes every time I call her which helps the excitement level.  I think Olive would do really well with an older calm small dog and a home where she isn’t left alone for long periods of time.   This petite girl has proven to be a really good sprinter always beating her foster brothers when they race across the field.  When she reaches her foster mom, she sits proudly and waits for her reward.  Olive responds really well to positive reinforcement whether it be a tiny treat or verbal praise.

December 5, 2019 – Little Miss Olive is doing fantastic and is slowly becoming a snuggle pug.  She will now sleep on my lap or pressed against my leg.  At first, she would climb up on my lap give me a kiss and then settle at the other end of the sofa.   Her favourite word is walk. This little pug makes an excellent walking partner.  After a few minutes of sniffing and doing her business, Olive walks with purpose and no longer pulls on the leash.  She doesn’t seem bothered by the weather so far and has no objections to wearing a coat and boots although she has very small feet and the boots tend to fall off.  Olive is insecure and needs a calm environment.  She shy’s away from loud voices and large sudden movements.  Olive doesn’t really socialize with her foster brothers but  their calm demeanor  helps her feel more secure.  When I came home the other day, Olive and two of her foster brothers were altogether in one dog bed.  Olive is a sweet spunky girl and a joy to foster.

November 26, 2019
– Olive is doing well, for the most part she is sweet, gentle and well behaved.
She went to the vet last week and got brought up to date in her vaccination.  Olive is highly excitable and when Peanut invited her to play just before dinner yesterday, the game quickly turned into a fight with little Olive being the aggressor.  This didn’t really surprise me as she gets very excited –  for example, when I get out her harness + she does suffer with separation anxiety. We are working on that by ignoring her until she calms herself.  She has had one accident in the house while I was out, but she peed by the back door.  I’m fairly certain it was caused by anxiety as she is completely house broken and doesn’t need to pee more often than usual when we are home.
Olive loves to go out.  At first, she was all over the place while we were walking, crossing back and forth around my legs but I noticed a considerable improvement today.  She seems to have plenty of energy, loves to give kisses and one of her favorite activities is rolling and hiding in a pile of blankets.  Olive is very bright and responsive.  She always comes when I say her name.  Today, she impressed me by sitting and waiting when I opened and went out the front door only coming when I called her. Olive is a darling and is already very bonded to her foster Mom.

November 21, 2019 – Olive was surrendered by her owner who couldn’t care for her anymore.  Olive is born on April 28, 2010 so she is 9 1/2 years old.  Olive is spayed and had her teeth cleaned recently.  She’s an energetic girl who gets along well with dogs.  Olive is going to the vet today for a complete check up and to be brought up to date in her vaccination and microchipped.  Stay tuned for more on this sweet little girl.

LOLITA

Age: 8
Adoption Fees: $300
Adoption Status:

June 13, 2022 – Lolita had been euthanized this past Friday as her condition has worsen and she was suffering.  Thanks to her amazing foster mom for all the care and love provided since November 2019.

February 14, 2022 – I’m so delighted to provide an update about our sweet Lolita. She continues to bring so much joy to those around her, and benefits greatly from the UMWPR hospice pug program.  For those who do not know her, Lolita entered the foster program on November 14, 2019.  For the first year of her fostering, she required intensive medical interventions, including the removal of 63 bladder stones, long-term antibiotic therapy for extensive bladder, ear, eye, and skin infections, and therapies and creative diet solutions for profound allergies and morbid obesity.  Her health was such that UMPR decided to trust us with the long-term management of her health, and also the nurturing of her heart and soul, which were sadly affected by her history of trauma and neglect.

These days Lolita is surrounded by love and secure in the knowledge that she belongs to a family who will do anything for her. Medically, she continues to require special support. She was recently diagnosed with a corneal ulcer, but I am happy to report that with swift and devoted treatment funded by UMWPR she recovered in a scant two weeks. As she continues to age, she is showing signs of spinal degeneration and dementia, but UMWPR is providing funding support for medications as well as physiotherapy. And, on top of all of this, the rescue continues to fund several allergy medications and specialized food.  This update wouldn’t be complete without acknowledging the members of the UMWPR community who have recently assisted our efforts to support Lolita by donating non-slip rugs, a stroller, and a wheelchair. At this point, Lolita retains fairly good use of her hind quarters, but having these items on hand means that we can help her through bad days, and ease her transition as her mobility declines. Thank you.  Let me wrap this up by telling you about a special role that Lolita plays in our family. My son used to have trouble falling asleep due to a medical condition. Since her early in her days living with us she assumed the role of putting him to bed. When it’s time for him to sleep, she curls right up under his chin and allows him to gently squeeze her close. She’s a cuddle bug, but he is the only one she will permit to hug her for an extended period of time. She usually drifts off as well. When she is sure he is deeply asleep, and never a moment before, she will get up and join us in the living room. Our precious girl does this every night, without fail. We are so lucky to have her.

May 17, 2021 – Hello! We’re so happy to give another Lolita update! It’s summer now, which means that the terrible season that shall not be named has passed, and walks can happen without many layers of snowsuits and sweaters and boots! It’s really tough to be a little old lady with bald spots during the winter in Ottawa, although her winter ensemble was the talk of the neighbourhood! Over the winter Lolita also proved that an old dog can learn new tricks – if she’s stubborn enough! She decided that she didn’t like it when I went for a walk on my treadmill “without” her, so she taught herself to jump on and walk with me.  It was very cute, and I do walk quite slowly, but for safety I relocated her to another available lap during mommy’s exercise time. But she will try to join me if the door is left open! Pugs are unstoppable!

Lolita is loving the warmer weather, and enjoys bathing in the sun, both inside and on the deck. She also enjoys her hobby of keeping as close to us as possible and that’s just fine with us. I don’t remember what it’s like to cook in the kitchen without her little cinnamon roll bum on my foot, or sleep without her snoring next to me under the blankets. She is truly a part of our family, and always at the centre of whatever we are doing (even if it’s just to sit on the floor, in the middle of an impromptu family dance party, and stare at us with complete confusion!)
She continues to require daily allergy medication, and her needs fluctuate with the seasons, just like human allergies. Unfortunately, because she has so many allergies, she doesn’t seem to get an “off” season.
Under my Wing continues to provide Lolita’s prescription medications, prescription food, and her regular check-ups, vastly improving her quality of life. Lolita has had her first dental procedure since coming to live with us at the end of April 2020.  She has lots a few teeth and came out of the dental procedure like a champion.
Please consider donating to UMWPR to help dogs like Lolita continue to overcome their past circumstances, and enjoy the lives they deserve to live!

April 23, 2020 – Lolita is doing well.  She has a very nice slimmer figure now and enjoys sunning whenever the weather permits.  Lolita was on a different antibiotic and she didn’t react well.  She had stomach problems and didn’t want to eat anymore.  We have stopped that medication and the vet is seeing what would be best for this sweet girl.  Lolita is a Hospice Pug which means that she will stay in her foster family forever as she went thru so much health wise and still has to remain on a few meds for the rest of her life and on a special hypoallergenic formula that also dissolves eventual stones in her bladder.  If you are interested in donating for Lolita’s vet expenses, you can do so on our Homepage thru CanadaHelps.  We will continue to provide regular updates on this sweet girl who is receiving tons of love in her foster family.

February 17, 2020 – Lolita’s bacterial culture confirmed a diagnosis of Methicillin-resistant Staph pseudintermedius or MSRP infection.
This is an antibiotic resistant staph infection that is highly contagious to other animals, and a low risk of contagion to humans. Here is a handout I found online:
Lolita has been prescribed a strong antibiotic for this type of infection. It is the mildest form of this type of antibiotic. She may need something stronger but that will come with more side effects so starting slow.  We will start giving her probiotics to help her gut. We should begin to see improvement in 3-4 days if it’s working.
Thyroid test result: Although Lolita’s T3 was a little low, the rest of her numbers were good, ruling out thyroid disease.
Ear Infection: Lolita’s Ears are looking good and the Infection appears to be gone. The vet cautioned that we finish all of the antibiotic and warned the infection could recur until all of the other infections are under control.
Anal Glands: Clean but still very inflamed.  Vet told us to continue with Metacam.
Weight:  More good news! Lolita’s down another .5 of a pound, bringing her to 24.5lbs
Medications: New antibiotic to be picked up this Friday, continuing:
– Apoquel (itchy skin)
– Metacam (Anal glands)
– Surolan (Ears)
Follow Up – we have a follow up booked for a recheck on Tuesday, March 10 @11am

February 4, 2020 – Lolita continues to be the highlight of our days. She’s a reading companion and a (grumpy) walking buddy, an extra pillow at night and a loyal, if not fearsome, guard dog (she’s has started standing in front of us and letting out one bark when the postman comes. She sure shows him). Still working on her skin issues. Lolita has been on the antibiotics for a week but there is still redness and irritation. We’re taking steps to reduce her discomfort. Anything that regularly touches her skin can cause abrasion – even soft harnesses, knitted sweaters and boots. She now wears a fleece sweatshirt to try to add extra, very soft padding for her skin under her harness and a fleece jacket. She was initially unimpressed but shivered much less and was less irritated after walks. We try to control the irritation on the tops of her paws from the boots with prescribed washes and oils. But it’s a balance to be sure. We’re tried to prevent more foot licking with soft, loose, fleece scarves (and maybe the very occasional tutu) and she’s fine with that (she’s never left alone with something around her neck except a vet approved cone). Thankfully, she spends very little time alone.  Finally, Lolita has lost another pound and a half! My doctor tells me my health has also improved, and advised me to tell everyone to adopt a pug.

January 28, 2010 – Lots of positive developments this week. The vet diagnosed Lolita’s remaining skin issue, a wide-spread infection, which had been caused by her previous, long-standing, untreated allergies breaking down the natural barriers on her skin. So now we have a plan! She will be taking another 3 weeks of antibiotics, as well as antibacterial baths and vitamin E paw massages. The vet is also checking to ensure she’s taking the best antibiotic for her infection by doing a culture. Her skin is still red and itchy and easily irritated, but we’re seeing small improvements and that makes us optimistic! Her fur is slowly growing back and thickening since her allergy treatment began and we hope it will continue to improve with these further treatments. Please note that Lolita cannot use typical creams, balms, waxes and oils because of their plant and/or animal ingredients that could trigger her allergies. Only straight vitamin E for this special girl!

In consultation with the vet, we’re trying to walk Lolita without boots and a gentle antibacterial wash when she returns home. We’ll see how it goes. It’s difficult to judge the best course of action when her feet are so sensitive but we’re paying close attention and doing what’s best for Lolita.  She does enjoy a nice heated blanket and a snuggle to comfort her after the hardship of winter exercise. So she does enjoy THAT aspect of walking!  This week we were also treated with joyful spinning dances and happy zoomies when we returned from an outing.  She’s also playing more with her stuffed toys. I guess it’s easier to be happy when your butt isn’t quite so itchy!

January 20, 2020 – Lolita does not like the snow at all! She informed us after the large snowfall that she would not be peeing outside anymore unless we did something, so she’s now the owner of quite an impressive pee path in the backyard. We still have to supervise to ensure that she does ALL of her business while she’s out or we can expect an accident when we she comes back inside.  We’ve been focusing on caring for Lolita’s feet this week. Although we’ve treated her allergies, the skin on her paws is still easily irritated, so we took a break from boots and walks for a few days. This will allow her skin to heal more fully, and allow us to assess if there is still another underlying condition that requires attention. Lolita continues to be sweet and affectionate. She is quietly content, but I think that, with time and security, she will express more of the joy and playfulness that we sometimes catch in glimpses. The best is yet to come for this sweetheart.

January 14, 2020 – Lolita saw the vet again this week and switched medications in an attempt to get her allergies under control. Due to the itching, she still scratches and chews on her feet quite a bit, though it is improving. She is growing very tired of wearing the cone all the time, and we don’t blame her. She is not a fan of the colder, snowy weather, and takes a bit of extra prodding to get going on walks. She would much prefer to curl up in bed with someone on chilly days, but we continue to help her exercise to get fit and healthy.  She continues to show limitless patience and sweetness, even in the face of excited and overtired children!

January 6, 2020 – Lolita will be up for adoption eventually, so this entry will be a description of her ideal family, based on my 6 weeks of caring for her. The ideal family for Lolita will be sensitive to her significant sensitivity to cold. Warm boots and a good winter coat will be a must. Lolita currently wears Paws boots but something warmer would probably be preferable. She will resist walks in cold weather, to the point of shivering and hiding when its walk time. Don’t forget she spent cold nights on the street……before coming to rescue. Lolita responds well to encouragement. I like to sing her a rousing cheer while walking (not required, but recommended because it’s fun for both of you).  With Lolita’s shocking history of bladder stones, her forever family will have to be committed to only giving her vet- approved food. She also needs to continue to lose weight, so consistent use of a measuring cup is essential. The longer you live with a chubby dog, the more normal their obesity will seem. Set a goal weight and stick to it.  Lolita’s forever family will be mindful of her health history. Know the signs of urinary tract or bladder infection and be prepared for the possibility of having to take her in for urinalysis to ensure she is well. Safe guarding her urinary health will be key. Also, take her out frequently (every 2-4 hours, maximum, and perhaps a trip at night or early morning). Ensure that she always has plenty to drink. Be aware of how allergies can affect health (ear infections, etc).  Lolita is a sweet-tempered dog who loves everyone.  Provide ramps for high beds and couches. Watch her on stairs. Be mindful of how her weight currently strains her knees. Lolita wants to be with her people. She wants to sit with them and sleep in someone’s bed. If you can give her your compassion and responsibility, she will love you with all her beautiful heart. Lolita is worth every ounce of care you can provide.

December 30, 2019 – Lolita participated in all the traditional holiday festivities, such as napping in wrapping paper, and dancing around the kitchen in hopes of catching a fallen piece of Christmas dinner (she didn’t). We also saw the vet this week, who identified some food allergies. We’re working to find the best diet to meet Lolita’s various needs, we have started her on a special Urinary SO especially made for dogs with food allergies. She has also started some antibiotics for a sore foot (caused by the allergies) and we’re watching a bump on her side for a bit to make sure it’s nothing concerning. The great news is that WE HAD NO ACCIDENTS THIS WEEK! woo hoo! Lolita has also been able to go a little longer between pees and no longer requires a night time pee every night. We still take her out if she wakes during the night. This improvement is especially wonderful because it means the inflammation caused by her many stones is healing.  We’re working hard on trying to take her farther on her walks. She requires a lot of coaxing to get away from the house but trots back to the house quite happily. For this reason, she does best if you take her somewhere she doesn’t know!! She likes meeting dogs and people on our walks and is quiet but sociable. Just a sweetheart.

December 23, 2019 – Lolita continues to be a delight. She loves to burrow under the blankets (the heavier the better) and we’ve developed a family policy to check every bed before sitting on it! She is an adorable shadow, following us from room to room and always crawling on my lap. We love having her. We only had 3 accidents in the house in the last week, which is a great improvement.  Lolita’s future family must be very sensitive to her cues to continue this positive development. She must go out every 2 hours unless she is asleep. She will not ask to go out, but quietly wait by the door. If you miss her cues, she will have an accident. We continue to take her out once at night. Sometimes this outing happens a little later, around 5am or 6am.  She has been more agreeable on walks, but is extremely sensitive to cold. We dress her in boots, a sweater and a coat but she will still shiver if she doesn’t keep moving. She loves to share my heated blanket with me. Lolita listens very well. Just this week she was making a run for the litter box and I said “no” and she stopped so fast she slid on the floor! (Side note, litter boxes will need to be placed out of reach or behind a gate.)

An ideal home for Lolita would have few stairs. She struggles to go up and down and prefers to avoid them. We have ramps that she uses to get on and off beds and couches. Lolita will be visiting the vet next week for recheck.

December 19, 2019 – Week #4 with Lolita. Her sweet personality continues to emerge. She loves to bury herself under the blankets and snuggle. She requires a nighttime sleeping buddy, but it’s no hardship as she is so cuddly. She hates walks but is frisky and playful when she comes back inside.  She requires bathroom breaks about every two hours. She can hold it for longer than that if she’s sleeping, but must go outside as soon as she wakes. Ideally, someone should take her outside half-way though the night. My husband gets up at around 5am, so he takes her out at midnight, but she may require another trip out if she wakes early. With these bathroom breaks, and 3 short walks per day she averages between 3-5 accidents per week. (This is a great improvement!)

Her hatred of the outdoors has resulted in some pretty clever behaviour. We discovered that if she is not accompanied right out into the yard (no waiting on the deck!), she will pretend to pee to get back inside faster, and then pee on the floor almost immediately. So she requires a pretty dedicated pee buddy during the cold weather. But we have been getting her out as much as we can, and with her new diet, it seems like she is looking a littler trimmer!  Lolita has spent some time around other pugs this week and was interested in socializing. She is such a sweetheart and will make a wonderful companion for someone (preferably someone who is home during the day or can have someone check on her every 2-4 hours).

December 12, 2019 – Lolita continues to improve every day. Her appetite has returned and her calorie consumption is carefully monitored to support weight loss. She needs some pumpkin every day to keep things “moving”.  She’ still struggling with some incontinence and pees in the house 1-2 times per day. We believe she is still healing from the trauma of carrying 63 stones in her bladder. She very clearly knows how to ask to go out and will do so when she can. At this time, we are taking her into the yard around 10 times per day (from 6am – 10pm and sometimes during the night if she wakes up) and *trying* to take her for walks 3x per day.

Lolita is afraid of the stairs and we will carry her down the stairs.

In true pug fashion, Lolita hates the cold, snow, rain and frost. Even with a sweater, jacket and booties, she shivers and refuses to go further than across the street, where she pees and then turns back toward home. At almost 30 pounds, she has a lot of influence on how far we can go. She’s like a mountain when she doesn’t wish to go somewhere, and a little bulldozer when she wants to go somewhere else. Maybe as more time passes from the trauma of being homeless, she will find joy in going outside again.  For these reasons, it’s even more important to be very attentive and disciplined with her diet. Lolita is the sweetest soul and we’re so happy to have her in our home. She’s a cuddle bug and very loving.

December 3, 2019 – Lolita’s recheck went very well, her incision is healing very nicely.  She had her anal glands expressed and they were quite full.  Vet gave the OK for Lolita to start going for walks.

November 30, 2019 – Wow! Another eventful week!  Lolita had her recheck with the vet and she’s cleared to slowly resume regular activity. She still pees in the house a couple of times each day, but she’s starting to ask to be let out when she’s on the main floor, and that’s a huge improvement.  Lolita hates stairs and avoids them when she can. We think that this makes sense. She’s very large with very short legs. We got her a ramp to traverse the stairs to the backyard, and another to get up on the couch.  She’s getting used to vet food. She will have to eat Urinary SO food for the rest of her life, due to a tendency to form bladder stones. Lolita sticks very close to her humans and prefers to always be next to someone. She needs a sleeping buddy. She will tolerate sleeping next to the bed If you arrange yourself so she can see you.

November 25, 2019 – Our first week with Lolita was very eventful! She had surgery on Thursday November 21 to remove an astounding 63 stones, several of which were almost as big as eggs. But the most astonishing part of her illness to us was that, in the days leading up to her surgery, when she must have been in agonizing pain, she never once growled or snapped at anyone. She was sweet and affectionate. There is not an aggressive bone in this lovely lady’s body!  When she returned to us on Friday, we could already see a difference in how she held herself and on her ability to sit comfortably. As the days have passed, she has continued to regain her energy and personality. Whereas she was lethargic when she first arrived, now she keeps us on our toes trying to keep her from running and jumping and playing too vigorously. She especially wants to play with the kids, and loves giving them kisses. Otherwise, she continues to despise her kibble for urinary stones, and complains loudly during family mealtime. She is also still using pee pads in addition to being taken out ever 1-2 hours. But this has improved dramatically since last week when she was very ill and painful. We look forward to watching this sweetheart continue to recover!

November 24, 2019 – Lolita has a surgery on Friday to get 63 bladder stones removed.  She’s back at her foster home for a smooth recovery. Lolita is a sweet girl who LOVES kids.  She will have to remain on special vet food to dissolve & prevent any more bladder stones.  Lolita need to lose weight so we will work on that with nice walks as soon as she’s recovered from her surgery.

November 20, 2019 – We welcomed Lolita into our home last night. She’s a very sweet senior who is presently facing some health issues. The vet identified very serious calcification in her bladder (stones), bladder infection & ear infections. She’s presently taking antibiotics, ear drops and pain medication. She will be having surgery for the bladder stones tomorrow. Despite her challenges, Lolita is a lovely lady. She’s affectionate and seems to particularly love children. She ignores the cat and I don’t think the guinea pigs are even on her radar.

After her surgery, our secondary goal to helping her recover from her various infections will be helping her adapt to a new diet and exercise routine. Lolita is rather full-figured and judging by the dance she did while I cooked supper, I suspect she lived off table food. We took shifts spending the night in the kitchen with her last night, (she cannot hold urine at all with the bladder stones so her bed is on the kitchen right now). But we look forward to integrating her into the family routine when she’s feeling better.

November 19, 2019 – Lolita was found stray.  This plumpy 29.9lbs girl is spayed (visible scar).  She has received vaccination while at the OHS and is going for a complete vet check today.  We are suspecting that she has a urinary tract infection at the least.  Stay tuned for more on this lovely girl.

MEMPHIS

Age: 20 months
Adoption Fees: $600
Adoption Status:

January 24, 2020 – Memphis is gone to his forever home.  He will share his life with a 3 year old female Pug X.

January 14, 2020 – Memphis continues to do well with his house training and accidents are far and few between … I pay a lot of attention to his training and we go outside a lot so he realizes this is the place to go potty . He needs lots of positive reinforcement to continue his progress .
Yesterday, my daughter and 7 month old grandson came to visit ..That proved to show me a different side of Memphis. He was curious but barked at the baby. He appeared to be a bit nervous about him.
Memphis is still having lots of fun racing around the yard with the resident pugs. He loves to play, but still loves his cuddle time and is my constant shadow .
Wherever I am , he is under my feet. Gets very upset if I have to go out, and overly excited when I come home. He still has some separation anxiety but he is doing better than at the beginning.
We are still working on his sitting quietly and taking his treats in a gentlemanly manner.  Memphis is doing very well , but gets pretty excited when it’s breakfast or dinner.
This sweet boy is becoming more confident, had lots of play with a visiting puppy; they each liked to bite at each other’s back legs to get the game started.
He did chase the cat this week, she was running so he thought that was the thing to do.
Memphis is a sweet loving boy, a wonderful addition to a family that has another young dog.

January 10, 2020 – Memphis is ready to be adopted.  His forever home will have a young playful dog.  Memphis thrives in the company of other dogs and needs to continue to be socialized.  He has come along very well since he came to us almost 2 months ago.

January 6, 2020 – Our little Memphis is presently having a wonderful sleep after his fun day at the Running of the Pugs yesterday ! What a thrill to see him having so much fun, prancing around, being a confident boy, meeting people, playing with the other pugs ! He has really blossomed from being a very timid, scared boy.  Memphis is still a little wary and shy in the beginning but has come a long way in a short time; he will need more socializing as he continues to thrive.
He loves to play with the resident pugs, will run after his toys but hasn’t learned to bring them back …yet ! He also likes to steal the toys from the resident pugs.
He loves to race around the yard with the resident pugs trying to catch him, but he is very fast and usually leads the pack !
Memphis is still learning to master the art of not pulling when he is walking on his leash. He is a smart boy and just needs a “firm hand “ to teach him his leash etiquette…We are seeing less accidents in the house, in 9 days we have had 2 accidents only… His training needs to continue and patience and positive reinforcement are helping him become more confident in this area. Memphis doesn’t alert me to the fact he has to go out, but he is going each time we go outside, and longer times in between. I tried him a couple times in the crate but that is not a great option for him and caused him much anxiety.
Memphis is such a loving little guy, he is very playful and energetic but he is also as cuddly as a teddy bear and loves his quiet time cuddled up or on my lap. He also likes to lie on the back of the couch and rest his head on my shoulder.  He likes a lot of attention, and does have a little separation anxiety.
Memphis will do well in a family that has another young dog to play with, being 20 months old, he has lots of energy to play and go for walks. We will be looking for a family with another young playful dog for Memphis’s forever home.

January 2, 2020 – Memphis is a special wee man.  He was not treated well prior to his surrender to the rescue.  This has left Memphis feeling insecure and nervous for the most part.  He is slow to warm up to new people, new situations & new surroundings.  Memphis needs slow introductions to all things new but once he has a comfort level, he is his happy playful self.  He is still very much a puppy (at almost two years old) and requires a lot of stimulation in the form of playing with toys, going for walks (lots of walks), playing chase with other dogs in the house or in a fenced back yard.  He would make a great jogging partner under the proper weather conditions.  Memphis would benefit from a young dog companion that is easy going and as playful as he is.  Memphis loves to encourage play by nipping at the back legs of his playmates.  He is learning to play fetch with a ball or toy but hasn’t yet mastered the returning the item.  Memphis plays hard and sleeps hard.  After a session of play he loves to curl up for a nap, preferably on your lap and isn’t shy about snoring.  Memphis is working on learning commands.  He does like to beg at the table and while you are preparing his food, so he has mastered what “off” means.  He is a quick learner however and needs gentle reminders as he doesn’t do well will loud angry voices.  Along with “off”, Memphis is learning to sit and very quickly learned how to take a treat gently.  We continue to work on his leash manners, he isn’t bad, but wants to be the leader of the pack. Memphis will need someone that is a leader and someone that is experienced and consistent in being the pack leader. Memphis enjoys sleeping on the big bed and has no issues sleeping through the night even if his human gets up to use the facilities.  Memphis’s new family should be a place where someone is home for the most part as he does suffer from separation anxiety.  He does best if he is on a regular potty schedule as he will easily forget that it is not acceptable to potty in the house (especially after a play session).  He hasn’t mastered the skill of going to the door and asking to be let out.  Memphis enjoys car rides but can be fearful of getting out in an unfamiliar environment. Memphis is still a work in progress, but we believe that is it time for him to be placed on the available for adoption list.  It is important that his forever family understands he is a very sensitive pug and that he will not be comfortable for a longer period than it would normally take for a pug to settle in.  The key to success with Memphis will be consistency, kindness and lots of love.

December 23, 2019 – Memphis is doing really well adjusting to a busy house with other animals. He is not scared and timid in our environment.
He went to the vets this week for to have his anal glands expressed and handled it well.
He is also doing good with his house training and  has had no accidents so far this week. Does his business when we go out in the morning, also around dinner time. Despite the freezing temperatures last week, we are out in the yard many times a day. Memphis loves to race around the yard with the resident pugs trying to catch him.
He play fights with the resident female pug and I’ve noticed he is not as rough playing as he was when he first came.  He loves his toys.
Memphis has some separation anxiety and gets a little upset when I go downstairs. Earlier this week, he was quite upset, today he was as well but not quite as vocal.  When I go out, he cries a little but it doesn’t last long.  Memphis is a loving boy, he likes to cuddle on my shoulders or on my lap. The only problem we have encountered which started about 3 nights ago when we went to bed. He was on my lap and started growling if the resident pugs got too close to me.
Memphis is really sweet, loving, playful and needs a lot of attention … I think being in a home with more than one other animal would not be the best environment for him.
December 16, 2019 – Memphis has been moved to another foster family as we thought it was in his best interest to socialize with other pug and play…He was a little timid at first and checked everything out but quickly settled in. It didn’t take much time and he wanted to play with the resident Boston. He is a little rough with his play sometimes but the resident Boston was so tolerant with his antics.
We were outside for awhile and Memphis just loved to run around .., Him and the resident pug do a lot of running and sometimes Merkley will join in.
Memphis also likes to be on my lap or in my arms.
My observations of Memphis in this short period of time is that he is not as scared as we thought. He doesn’t back off from anything, runs around as if he owns the place.  Memphis is very loving and cuddly. Also likes to look out the window. He’s just a puppy, needs a little more house training, and coaching on how to play more gentle … but adjusting well in a house with other playful dogs.  Memphis will do well in a house with another young dog but no young kids he’s a bit rough when he plays.  This sweet boy like a lot of love and attention, and when I went outside the gate to shovel he cried even though he could see me.

December 9, 2019 – Memphis recovering well from his neutering surgery.  He tend to follow his foster parents everywhere they go. We have taken some good walks and the new trick is, given Memphis a treat when he pees outside. He lifts his leg on a pole to get a treat. He loves to sit in the window like a cat and enjoy the sunlight. Memphis  also loves spending time with his foster grandpa. He still not comfortable with little people or anyone who tries to pet my head instead of my chin. Memphis  is very playful and does paw a lot but we are telling him no. He is still recovering from his first home, high anxiety and almost PTSD so we have to be careful of doors, or loud noises around the house.  He is doing well and has made himself at home, we are seeing a lot less accidents.

November 28, 2019 – Memphis’s neutering surgery went well. He ate his dinner well last night.
This morning we have our puppy back! He wants to run everywhere so we have to calm him down so he doesn’t hurt his sutures. He is back sitting by the window making little noises as passersby walk on the street. The cuddles and the kisses are back too!

November 24, 2019 – Memphis is getting more comfortable and adjusting to his new environment. He has met and made a new friend with next door dog, he gets over excited to play.  Memphis is starting to listen more and more, from sit to wait while walking. He is very cuddly and sleeps at his foster Mom’s side. He knows when you are not well or having a bad day, and is right there to help.
Memphis is getting neutered on November 27.

November 18, 2019 – Memphis went to the vet last Saturday and got a full check up.  He has been vaccinated and microchipped.  Memphis is 19lbs and he has an appointment to get neutered on November 27.  Memphis is born with a smaller eye (right one) and the vet think he is most probably blind from that eye.  Not requiring any medication on that eye.
November 15, 2019 – Memphis was a little shy and nervous at first. Sudden movements would make him flinch so he is learning that the world is not always so scary. He warms up quickly! Before you know it you have a shadow following you around.
He has the cutest little butt wiggle!
When he walks, Memphis tends to bolt ahead! Adventure awaits and he wants to be first!
He is still learning the proper places to pee.  Once he gets neutered, he will stop marking with good positive reinforcement. Memphis LOVES his raw food. The first snowfall, he loved to jump in it!  Memphis likes his cuddles. He is learning to be quiet while we work and just cuddles at the bed at their feet or sometimes just on the floor even though the bed is right there!  Toys don’t tend to keep his attention for very long.

November 13, 2019 – Memphis is a sweet boy.  He is 1.5 year old,  he seems to have been abused.
Memphis is going to the vet this Friday for a complete check up, to get up to date in his vaccination and get microchipped. He also need to be neutered.  Memphis is born with a smaller eye, it doesn’t affect him but he is most certainly blind from that eye.  He is very good with other dogs and has quite a nice muscular body.  Stay tuned as we get to know Memphis a bit more in the coming weeks.

LUNA

Age: 7 years old
Adoption Fees: $300
Adoption Status:

February 25, 2020 – Luna & Bentley went to their forever home today.

February 6, 2020 – Luna and Bentley are doing great. They are running around, playing & wrestling together. Sometimes, Luna is getting jealous over attention and they wrestle to be number one. They are really cute and enjoying their play and walk.  Come meet Bentley and Luna at the Winter Paw Thaw on February 9 from 12 to 3:30PM at Ron Kolbus Lakeside Centre.

January 10, 2020 – Bentley & Luna are extremely bonded. If they are left alone for more than a few hours, they will both cry when we come home. Both are very well trained and well behaved. They understand commands such as “lie down, sit, go to your bed “. When Luna was spayed, Bentley stayed home and was very depressed. As soon as Luna was back home from the vet, Bentley spent the entire evening at her side.

Luna has to use her eye medicine in rest of her life morning and night. Bentley & Luna are extremely well with kids and strangers. They both like kisses & hugs very much. They are also well behaved in car & trips.

We call Luna a sneaky kisser because when she is on your lap suddenly she try to kiss you. Luna is not shy to come and sit on anyone’s lap asking to petted. Bentley usually watches from the distance but he also loves getting petted. They both don’t leave your side when you do any movement in the kitchen.

The first three to four weeks, they were not showing much attachment towards to us. We think they were grieving their previous owner.

They love their walks and they walk side by side. Their bed should be put side by side since they sleep together. They go out for pee at 6 am and they get fed at 6:30 am for breakfast. Their supper time is 5 pm. They currently both get ear drops, twice a day for a mild ear infection.

They are both lovely dogs with unbreakable bond to each other. The best home for Bentley & Luna would be a retired couple who can spend time with them. They are not used to be left alone long hours.
January 2, 2020 – Luna & Bentley are doing well. Luna is recovering from her spaying surgery that took place on December 30. Both are enjoying short and long walks once the weather is cooperative. They like to cuddle all the time. We are really enjoying their company.

December 19, 2019 – Luna & Bentley are doing great. They are like puppy, competing for attention. They have full of energy but they don’t like wet weather. Since my wife is at home, they are spending time with them all the time therefore they are very attached to her.  Luna will require eye lubricant for the rest of her life.  She is getting spayed on December 30.

November 28, 2019 – Bentley & Luna went to the vet yesterday for a recheck.  took them to vet yesterday. Luna’s eyes and ears are getting better as well as her skin. Luna has a cyst in her left side the size of an almond. Vet said we need to monitor if the cyst grows. Bentley ‘s ears and skin are getting better. They are very playful in the apartment. We noticed that they were trained for “do you wanna go for a WALK”. Every time they hear the word:Walk , they get crazy excited and barking and crying from happiness. They are very good with guests in our place. They are very well trained and don’t do any accident.  They are so attached to each other. They sleep, eat, walk, run together. Luna asks for attention and Bentley waits to receive. Luna gets very much jealous if we pet Bentley. She cut off Bentley every time when we show any attention.  Luna & Bentley are getting their teeth cleaned on December 6.

November 18, 2019 – Bentley & Luna are getting better every week.  Bentley is slowly learning that marking the furniture is not an option. Luna is extremely consistent when it comes to do her business outside. They are getting their medication periodically and there is a great improvement on Luna’s eyes. They are so attached to each other and they take naps together everyday. They are also very friendly when we have guests. After an hour or so, they were laying down right beside our guests and leaning on them.

November 11, 2019 – Bentley & Luna are doing great. Due to their skin issue, they do scratch but their medication will help them to heal. I got 2 eye different drops for Luna for her eyes due to “dry eyes” issue. She will get rechecked in 2 weeks. The vet suggested to get Bentley and Luna’s teeth cleaned. They both got drops for ear infection. They got shots for rabies and distemper.
They are pretty active and playing a lot. They also used to sleep on the bed with us as well as sleeping on their bed. Bentley loves sleeping in the crate. From time to time, he goes to in the rate, lies down and sleeps there. Luna can sleep everywhere. She is so attached to us. Bentley humps Luna and Luna humps Bentley. They are so funny. They walk long and short walks side by side really nicely. They love going outside for their walks.
They are very good with each other, always sleep leaning over to each other. They get jealous if you pet one of them , the other one will come to you for requesting pet.

November 9, 2019 – Luna (black one on the photo) came in last night with her father, Bentley.  She is 7 years old.  She is very attached to her father so we will want them adopted together.  Stay tuned for more on this sweet girl as we get to know her better.

January 14, 2020 – Last week, Luna and Bentley had a great time at The Running of The Pugs event. They ate, went outside then hop to bed. They both really enjoy long walks. Luna recovered from the spay surgery and cyst extraction completely. Great news was her lab result for cyst came back as negative. They love snow and even when it’s slushy around, they run and run. When they come from their late afternoon walk before supper, they like to play with their toys. They chase each other around the living room. If any one of us puts a pillow on the lap, they both race each other to sit on that pillow. These little angels are waiting for their forever home to give more love.
